Red Mulberry - Morus rubra
This is a species of mulberry native to eastern and central North America. Red mulberry is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree, growing 35–50 feet tall.
The fruit is similar in appearance to a blackberry, 3⁄4–1+1⁄4 inches long. It is initially pale green, ripening to red or dark purple. The berries are widely sought after by birds in spring and early summer
The berries are sweet and delicious right off the tree. They can also be used as fillings of pastries, as preserves, and fermented into wine. You won't find mulberries in the grocery store because they dont hold up well to packing and shipping. But if you plant your own tree you will have an unlimited supply of these sweet berries and plenty to share with the wildlife!
