The Sassafras is a beautiful native tree that grows anywhere from 30-60 ft. tall.  All parts of the tree are spicy and aromatic. The roots of the Sassafras Tree were once used to make root beer and were considered to be medicinal cures for many diseases. Today, products containing safrole are regulated by the FDA because of potential liver complications caused by high concentrations.

The Sassafras Tree is an interesting tree which actually has three different leaf structures on a single plant. Sassafras trees have single, double or triple lobed leaves that exude a fragrant, citrus-like scent. The leaves turn lovely colors in the fall.
